So you think you want to get a dog |
Before jumping to the conclusion that you want a dog for the kids to grow up with or to protect you and your family, or for companionship for your spouse or for whatever other reason that you might think you want a dog, think about why you are getting a dog and who is going to take care of it.
If you are getting the dog for your kids and they have promised that they will walk the dog, feed the dog, and clean up after the dog, think again. They are kids. They probably will for a short time and then, who will do all those chores.
Puppies are babies. They are not trained. Do you have the time to train the puppy to grow up to be a good canine citizen? Do you know how to train a dog? They can’t talk and you can’t explain things to them. What do you know about training a dog?
There is a lot to know. I have been taking private dog training lessons for over 5 years. I have finally realized that I have graduated out of the category of beginner dog owner.
Last week, the dog trainer that I take private lessons from mentioned to me that the breed of dog that I have is not meant for a beginning trainer. I have three obedience titles on two dogs… I am not a beginner, anymore.
People get dogs for any number of reasons. But, many times, the dog gets forgotten about while the kids go to school and soccor practice. dad and mon go to work. The dog gets left behind and many times is bored. When a dog is bored, your home is in danger of destruction.
It’s not the dog’s fault. He doesn’t know that the furniture wasn’t put there for you and not for his chewing enjoyment. He doesn’t know that the carpet isn’t like the grass outside. He needs to learn all those things.
